Peter was instrumental in securing the VAT rebate scheme for hospices and has continued to advise Hospice UK and many hospices on its implementation in order to secure maximum benefits from the scheme. He has an excellent knowledge of VAT issues affecting hospices, and his expertise has been crucial in securing estimated savings of £25m pa for the sector. Craig Duncan Hospice UK

The Railway Preservation Society of Ireland is a non-profit making charity dedicated to the restoration and operation of mainline steam trains throughout the island of Ireland.  While its base in Whitehead, Co. Antrim, was undergoing a £3 million transformation into the Whitehead Railway Museum, HMRC stopped refunding VAT on payments already made.   The financing of the project hinged on the Society receiving these refunds.  Our accountants contacted Peter Ladanyi for help.  He displayed an in-depth knowledge of the specialised fields of charities, railway preservation and taxation.  He successfully advised us on how to make our case to HMRC to have the VAT refunds restored.  Without Peter’s help, it is possible that the Museum would not have been completed to the point of being opened.  We now hope that it will become one of Northern Ireland’s leading tourist attractions. Peter helped us understand the VAT for Hospices Scheme and provided advice and support in making the claim, including attending a meeting with HMRC after the claim had been submitted. We have now received this refund which has been of significant benefit to the charity. Peter’s VAT knowledge and his professionalism are commendable, and we are happy to recommend this service to others with VAT issues. Sue Upton J’s Hospice

Shortly after an inspection from HMRC, I was told by them that I had a historical liability going back several years because they had interpreted differently to myself as to whether my service was zero or standard rated. In panic mode, I contacted several VAT consultants, big and small. Within hours, Peter had gotten back to me with a full understanding of my situation and showed an enthusiasm to take on the case and gain a victory for what was seen as an obstinate position by HMRC.

He quickly identified the legal points and case law needed to counter the HMRC’s position and then build a strategy and a pathway to a successful outcome. Whilst I could have chosen from an array of consultants, I felt the other alternatives were too bound up in their own corporate processes and faffing to be truly sensitive to each individual case in the way that Peter is. HMRC eventually conceded and accepted our interpretation on zero-rating the service, thus saving a small company a 6 figure sum. Luke Roberson Pedibus Ltd

Peter offered to review our VAT position as we approached the end of the first year of the new VAT scheme for Hospices. We commissioned him to do a full review, and he was able to recommend a much simpler approach to calculating our partial exemption, which has saved us a lot of time. In the course of the review, he identified that we had missed the opportunity to reclaim VAT on a recent capital project. He assisted me in drafting a letter quoting the technical basis for the reclaim and attended the subsequent meeting with HMRC which resulted in the Hospice successfully recovering £79k. Peter has extensive knowledge of VAT, the charity sector, and Hospices in particular, and so is able to provide timely and relevant advice on very complex matters. I would highly recommend his services to others. To those who might be in two minds about taking professional advice, I can say that it really is money well spent. We engaged the services of Peter to advise on how best to approach the new VAT refund scheme for hospices. His knowledge of the scheme was excellent, and we were very pleased with the guidance Peter provided and his explanation of the options available to us. Shortly after submitting our first claim under the scheme, we were visited by HMRC. Peter continued his support and attended the visit to help answer questions that arose. As a result, we expect to reclaim over £50,000 of VAT per year through the scheme, which would have been previously irrecoverable. We were very pleased with Peter’s services and would be happy to recommend him for any VAT issues. Riyad Islam, Director of Finance and Resources, St Clare Hospice.

The clear, concise and prompt advice we have received from Peter Ladanyi has been invaluable in the interpretation of the VAT legislation for Charities minefield. I have no hesitation in recommending his excellent services to other charitable organisations Liz Cotton St Michaels Hospice Hereford

I have worked closely with Peter on a number of VAT issues over the last two years and consider him to be one of the most knowledgeable, creative and influential VAT experts within the charity sector. The value of his work to our organisation has been immense, and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend him, particularly to hospices such as ourselves. Jackie Bliss Finance Director Havens Hospice

The rolling out of the new Hospice VAT schemes has been a welcome relief for us at the Martlets in the Brighton and Hove area. The reclaim has been of immense value in releasing more funds to invest in our clinical and community activities. Peter was immensely helpful in laying out the groundwork for how to facilitate claims and how to strategically align the charity to the new scheme. The introduction of consultants is always an interesting debate for charities, and in this example, I can only endorse what Peter has done to really set us off in the right direction, and the fees paid are exponentially outweighed by the benefits received by the Martlets. Peter was recommended to me by colleagues within Hospice UK and has been an invaluable guide during the process of both registering our hospice for VAT and preparing our retrospective claim under the new regime for charitable hospices.  Peter has always been quick to respond with advice that was clear and considered.  Before submitting our first claim, we invited HMRC to meet with us to approve our methodology, and Peter attended to support us and facilitated a most productive meeting.  Peter’s fees seem modest compared to the amounts of VAT we anticipate reclaiming in the future, and I would not hesitate to recommend his services most highly!  Vinyo Aidam – Head of Finance and IT, St Michael’s Hospice Hastings and Rother

We have always found Peter excellent to work with. He is clear, concise and very helpful in explaining the finer points of VAT, which can be a complex topic. We would recommend his work unreservedly and are delighted with his help in winning our case against HMRC. Amelia Foster – Former Director, Roald Dahl Museum

With Peter’s help, we reviewed our VAT operation and made an application to HMRC…we were not only successful in recovering £34,000 from HMRC, but also his expertise helped put the ongoing management of our VAT on a much sounder footing.
Polly Dickinson – Business Manager, Anaphylaxis Campaign

I have worked with Peter on several occasions, and whether it is a matter of guidance on basic compliance or helping us to navigate through partial exemption treatment, I have always found his advice to be thoughtful, practical and to the point. Peter’s experience, and particularly his understanding of the challenges faced by charities and not for profit organisations, is invaluable, and he is our “go to” point for VAT advice and support. Ian Donald – Restoration of Appearance & Function Trust

Peter is an expert in the field of VAT. His advice has proven to be extremely helpful, and despite the complexities of VAT, the advice is always clear. Where required, the advice has resolved disputes with HMRC in our clients’ favour. There is no doubt that in our mind, Peter adds value to our client relationships.Greg Nichols Sayers Butterworth
