About me
Peter Ladanyi, VAT Advisor
My aim is to provide effective cost-effective VAT consultancy and advice to charities, hospices and not-for-profit organisations. I can advise on all VAT matters.
I have over 30 years of experience working in VAT. I started my career at HM Customs and Excise. Here I undertook a variety of roles including enquiries, compliance visits and eventually headquarters policy work. Following this, I spent 12 years leading the VAT team of a top 20 accountancy practice. I then established my own practice in Jan 2014.
I can provide the technical skills of a large practice without the overheads. This means I can offer a better value and a more personal service. I am covered by comprehensive professional indemnity insurance and regulated by the Chartered Insitute of Taxation.
Experience
I have a wide range of experience.
At HMCE I carried out a number of VAT roles including being a Visiting Officer. I also worked at HMRC HQ which gave me the experience of policy and a lot of experience dealing with VAT cases. At HMCE, cases I was involved in included: whether a car was available for private use; the VAT treatment of tourist boards and their VAT recovery; whether money was paid under a grant or contract; and the Institute of Chartered Accountants England and Wales, House of Lords case on business.
Since leaving HMRC I have been involved in a number of appeals. These have included: cases on whether charity membership subscriptions should be exempt; zero-rating for care homes; the option to tax and standard method override; whether free memberships are non-business; and VAT recovery for a museum.
I have a lot of policy experience. I can assist with lobbying for and negotiating changes to the VAT system on behalf of clients and can point to at least six policy changes in the last 20 years which I have helped bring about. These include the refund scheme for war memorials introduced in 2000. I have more recently been involved via Hospice UK in discussion on the VAT refund scheme for hospices.
I am a member of the Chartered Institute of Taxation and have both lectured and written on VAT. Publications include the Tolleys Guide to the Taxation of Charities.
